Module 12: CICS Resource Definitions and Administration

CEDA

CEDA is the full-power resource definition transaction. With it you inspect, change and install resource definitions on the CSD - DEFINE new ones, ALTER existing ones, and INSTALL them into the running system. It runs program DFHEDAP.

What CEDA can do

  • DEFINE - create a new resource definition in a group. Opens an overtype screen with every attribute.
  • ALTER - change an existing definition. Only the CSD copy changes; the running system is untouched until install.
  • DISPLAY - show one definition. EXPAND - list every definition in a group or list.
  • COPY / MOVE - copy or move definitions between groups, with AS(newname) and TO(newgroup) options.
  • DELETE - remove a definition from a group. Needs care - deleting a live resource's definition does not uninstall it.
  • INSTALL - copy definitions from the CSD into the running CICS system. This is what makes them active.
  • CHECK - validate a group or list before installing; catches broken references early.
  • LOCK / UNLOCK - protect a group or list so only the locker can change it.
  • ADD / REMOVE - put a group into a list or take it out. APPEND - join one list onto another. RENAME - rename groups and definitions.

Groups, lists and the startup flow

  • You always work inside a GROUP. Groups keep one application's definitions together.
  • CEDA ADD GROUP(ORDGRP) LIST(ORDLIST) puts the group in a list. Many groups can share one list.
  • GRPLIST=ORDLIST at CICS startup installs the whole list automatically.
  • A definition can exist in several groups, but installing two definitions of the same resource name causes a conflict - the last one installed wins.

Everyday CEDA usage

  • Type CEDA on a clear screen, then a command: CEDA DEFINE TRANSACTION(ORD1) GROUP(ORDGRP).
  • PF keys: Enter saves the overtype screen, PF3 ends and saves, PF12 cancels.
  • Get into the habit: DEFINE, CHECK, INSTALL - in that order.

Example - a typical CEDA session:

CEDA DEFINE PROGRAM(ORDPGM) GROUP(ORDGRP) LANGUAGE(COBOL) DATALOCATION(ANY) * (fill the overtype screen, press Enter, PF3) CEDA CHECK GROUP(ORDGRP) * CHECK successful CEDA INSTALL GROUP(ORDGRP) * INSTALL successful CEDA DISPLAY TRANSACTION(ORD1) GROUP(ORDGRP) CEDA EXPAND GROUP(ORDGRP) ALL
