z/OS Troubleshooting
Uxxxx user abend diagnosis
A Uxxxx code is a user abend: the program itself decided to stop, usually after detecting a condition it cannot handle.
What it means
- Unlike system abends (Sxxx), user abends are issued deliberately by application code.
- The number is site-defined — U0001 at one shop means something different at another.
Common causes
- Program detected invalid input and issued an abend instead of handling it.
- A standard routine (sort, DB2, CICS) returned an unexpected code the program treats as fatal.
- Deliberate abend used as a debugging trap left enabled.
How to diagnose
- Read the job log message that accompanies the U-abend — it usually names the reason.
- Find the ABEND macro or language abend call in the source.
- Check the site runbook: many shops document their standard user abend codes.
How to fix it
- Address the underlying condition the program detected.
- Replace deliberate abends with proper error handling and return codes where appropriate.
Example: Prefer return codes over user abends
* Instead of abending on bad input:
IF WS-INPUT-OK = "N"
DISPLAY "Invalid input record: " WS-REC-KEY
MOVE 12 TO RETURN-CODE
STOP RUN
END-IF.
A clear message plus return code beats a bare U-abend for support.
Interview tip
- Q: How would you troubleshoot a Uxxxx user abend diagnosis in production?
- A: I would read the accompanying job log message, find the abend call in source, check the site runbook for that code, and fix the underlying condition.
Prevention checklist
- Document all user abend codes in the runbook.
- Use descriptive messages with every deliberate abend.
